THE MODERNAIRES
The Modernaires começou como um trio de colegas em Buffalo, na Lafayette High School em 1935. O trio cujos membros eram Hal Dickinson, Chuck Goldstein e Bill Conway foi chamado de "Don Juan - Two and Three". Com a chegada de Ralph Brewster recrutado para formar um quarteto para tocar com a Fred Waring Orchestra, o nome passou a ser, definitivamente 'The Modernaires." Em 1937 foram apresentados por Paul Whiteman no rádio, e gravaram várias canções de clássicos dessa época, alguns com Jack Teagarden. Em outubro de 1940 o lendário Glenn Miller os convidou para gravar .Em Janeiro de 1941 Miller fez com que os Modernaires se transformassem numa parte importante da grande banda, a mais popular de todos os tempos. Paula Kelly (Mrs. Hal Dickinson), foi acrescentado à banda por Glenn Miller entre março a agosto de 1941. Após Miller juntar - se ao Exército, Paula Kelly tornou-se membro permanente do The Modernaires, transformando-o em quinteto. Johnny Drake substituiu Chuck Goldstein e Fran Scott substituiu Bill Conway. Após o desaparecimento Miller's, The Modernaires gravou vocais de várias versões de sucessos instrumentais da banda. Seu estilo, harmonias e "blend" iriam influenciar mais tarde artistas como The Four Freshmen.Na minha opinião pessoal os Modernaires foram o melhor conjunto vocal de todos os que faziam parte das grandes orquestras na chamada "Vintage era", embora o páreo fosse duríssimo com os "Pied Pipers". O que, a meu ver, decidia a parada era o "blend" das vozes dos Modernaires, que soavam mais compactas, e se completavam melhor do que as dos igualmente notáveis "Pied Pipers".

The Modernaires had their beginnings as a trio in Buffalo, New York, in 1935. Their first engagement was with the Ted Fio Rito Orchestra. The members, Hal Dickinson,
Chuck Goldstein, and Bill Conway were called Don Juan-Two and Three. Soon after that, they joined the Ozzie Nelson Band, and became known as The Three Wizards of Ozzie. Next came a stint with Fred Waring, where they recruited Ralph Brewster to make it a quartet, and The Modernaires were a reality. In 1937 they joined Paul Whiteman's musical organization where they were featured on his radio show, and recorded many of the classic songs of that era, a few with Jack Teagarden. Their biggest break came in 1939 when the legendary Glenn Miller engaged them to record. Soon after, Glenn Miller made the Modernaires an important part of the most popular big band of all time. Paula Kelly (Mrs. Hal Dickenson) was added to the group, making it a quintet, and for the next few decades they traveled the world many times over making history with the Glenn Miller Band. The Modernaires are celebrating over70 years in show business. Hal Dickinson and Paula Kelly married and their daughters are continuing "The Modernaires" tradition to the present day.
