THE RITZ
Um dos primeiros conjuntos de "Barbershop", do início do século XX, se chamava the Ritz - coisa que só vim a saber recentemente - e conto por que: na época em que a Rádio Jornal do Brasil (até os anos 80) ainda era um veículo de divulgação de boa música, ouvi pela primeira vez o THE RITZ. Procurei, mas não encontrei nenhum vinyl do THE RITZ no Brasil. Mais tarde, já no tempo do Napster e, depois, Audio Galaxy, procurava pelo THE RITZ mas batia de frente com as gravações do referido grupo de "Barbershop", das antigas; vejam só: era fácil encontrar gravações "daquele Ritz", de quase 100 anos e não existia uma mísera cópia do "novo - ou jovem Ritz"! Prá terem ideia, este CD que estou postando hoje, só fui encontrar em Rotterdam, na Holanda, onde tem uma livraria e discoteca que dá show em qualquer outra que eu já tenha visto em qualquer cidade do mundo: TEM DE TUDO! (Aliás, tinha outro CD do Ritz, mas eu não me emocionei com o repertório; até hoje me arrependo...)

THE RITZ
The Ritz is a Boston-based vocal jazz group featuring four singers and a three-piece rhythm section. Founded in 1982 by Darryl Bosteels and Sharon Harris as "Puttin' on the Ritz", it established itself as one of the leading vocal jazz ensembles in the U.S.A. The group is well known for its versatility of style-featuring tunes from the medieval `madrigal' style through the American jazz
periods of the '20's to 40's to jazz-fusion sounds of today. They have been the opening act for Gerry Mulligan and the Pointer Sisters. The Ritz wrote a lot of their own music and arrangements. Darryl says it like this: "As far as choosing music for the Ritz, myself and Sharon were responsible for that. Sharon enjoyed writing originals mostly, and I was something of a jazz historian with an extensive record collection and loved to find offbeat material for us to perform. In our early albums, we did a few tributes to Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, and later to the Four Freshmen and the Hi-Lo's, all favorites of ours. I particularly liked "scat" based numbers such as Flat Foot Floogie, Cottontail, What's This?, and others." On the album `Movin' up' (our personal favourite) Rebecca Hardiman and Bob Stoloff were replaced by Melissa Hamilton and Bob Martin. Sharon Harris left the group after the album `Flying' which in our view changed the style of the music.
Except from a few leads on the band members we haven't been able to discover any sites on the group. We did find that pianist Jeff Auger and drummer Les Harris Jr. both teach at the University of Southern Maine. Bass man Marty Ballou plays in a R&B group. And Bob Stoloff wrote a book on scat singing.

MINHA OPINIÃO
THE RITZ foi um conjunto de vida curta: gravou meia dúzia de discos e se desfez. Nunca chegou a fazer grande sucesso, mesmo porque, na mesma época, surgiram o Manhattan Transfer, o Rare Silk,o New York Voices. O THE RITZ é "meio barro, meio tijolo" às vezes lembra os "vintage groups", às vezes soa mais mais moderno, como o Manhattan Transfer, e fica por aí. Enquanto seus concorrentes Ritz, se notabilizaram pela audácia dos arranjos e concepções mais modernas, o THE RITZ optou por uma atitude mais conservadora e por arranjos mais tradicionais. É um bom grupo, competente, agradabilíssimo ao ouvido, mas não chega a causar grande comoção. Tocam e cantam corretamente, com bom gosto e competência e talvez aí esteja o problema: "não se decidiram se era um conjunto vocal que tocava, ou se era um instrumental que cantava". Mas é um trabalho respeitável e este CD merece ser ouvido com atenção e guardado como uma raridade - sem falar na presença, como convidado especial, do grande trumpetista CLARK TERRY. Este foi o último álbum gravado pelo grupo, antes de se desfazer.
