O quarteto vocal inglês G4 foi vencedor de um show de talentos "The X - Factor", versão inglesa do "American Idol". Grande novidade... FLÁVIO CAVALCANTI já fazia a mesma coisa na TV Tupy com a "Grande Chance", no final dos anos 60. E o CHACRINHA, idem, na TV Globo, com sua Buzina do Chacrinha. Pois é: "The X Factor" ou "American Idol" nada mais são do que uma versão mais bem acabada e sofisticada de Flávio Cavalcante e/ou Chacrinha "made in USA/England".

G4 were a four-piece British vocal troupe who first came to prominence when they finished second in ITV's talent show The X Factor in 2004. The members met at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, from which the name G4, standing for "Guildhall 4", derives. The original members were Jonathan Ansell, Mike Christie, Ben Thapa and Tom Lowe. Prior to the group's X Factor appearance, Tom Lowe resigned as bass due to artistic differences and Matthew Stiff took his place. After The X Factor, G4 signed a £1.5 million album deal with Sony BMG. Their debut album, G4, was released on February 28, 2005. It reached Number One for Mother's Day weekend 2005 and sold over 245,000 copies in the first week. On April 5, 2007, the group announced on GMTV that they would be splitting after their 2007 tour due to disagreements within the band. G4 made their final performance at Romsey on July 28, 2007.

Are G4 pop, are they opera or are they indeterminately heterogeneous enough to be identified as a new species called "popera"? What is clear, however, is the populist supermarket direction they've been prodded in. In mitigation, perhaps this is understandable. Despite the bravery and accomplishment of applying operatic blossom to production and the steadfastly predictable musical arrangements on the pop numbers enforces the sort of backdrop karaoke conservatism which distracts from G4's more interesting vocal work, which, after all, is this ensemble's very raison d'etre.

MINHA OPINIÃO: "Popera"??? Não seria melhor "chatopera"? O G4 é uma espécie de "King´s Singers", com menos talento. O repertório não podia ser mais "soporífero". Nem mesmo a tentativa como o arranjo meio "disco/salsa" de Volare consegue salvar a pasmaceira. (Só faltou um video com o Travolta dançando...). E os meninos, com voz de "cantor-de-campo-de-futebol", tentam igualar os feitos sonoros de Pavarotti, Tenores & Cia. Por conta disso, venderam uma "tonelada" de CDs. Felizmente (pelo menos para os meus ouvidos), se deram por satisfeitos e tiraram o time de campo.
(*)Ali em cima diz que o primeiro álbum dos meninos foi o campeão de vendas como presente para o "Dia das Mães" de 2005. Que maldade! Que falta de respeito! Fazer uma coisa dessa com a própria mãe! Mas isso provavelmente justifica uma notícia que li em algum lugar: naquele ano o número de suicídios cresceu na Inglaterra e USA...
