DAVINCI´S NOTEBOOK

DAVINCI´S NOTEBOOK
Da Vinci's Notebook, Washington, D.C.'s award-winning a cappella quartet, takes four part harmony and stands it on its ear. Described as "Bobby McFerrin and 'Weird Al' Yankovic colliding on stage," their tight vocal blend, infectious humor, and madcap antics have made them a favorite on stages and at festivals throughout the country. Since the group's founding in 1993, their eclectic blend of a cappella harmony - a fusion of doo-wop, jazz, bluegrass, calypso, opera, and rock - has evolved into a unique show that the Washington Post called "exuberance...crashing off the walls!" The quartet has appeared at music clubs and fine arts series throughout the East Coast, including the Bitter End, the Birchmere, the Barns of Wolf Trap, and the Kennedy Center. Equally at home in front of large crowds, they have also performed at Birmingham's City Stages, the Taste of D.C., the Fairfax Fair, and dozens of other festivals. Internationally, they have toured France and the Caribbean. Winners of the 1997 Mid-Atlantic Harmony Sweepstakes Festival, Da Vinci's Notebook has been featured on NBC's Today Show, on Comedy Central, in the Washington Post and Washington City Paper, and are frequent guests on local radio stations.

ALBUM REVIEW
These guys are funny through and through - how else could they enlist support from Bobs members Joe Finetti and Richard Greene? The former is co-author (with DVN's Paul Sabourin) of "Window-Washing Cowboy," an amusing country tune about unrequited love narrated by Richard Greene's booming bass voice. Our favorite on this CD is hilarious "Liposuction," a rhyme romp with lines like "Take the fat cells from your hips/Put 'em in Barbara Hershey's lips." More familiar tunes include "Stuck In The Middle With You," and the theme from "I Dream Of Jeannie" (as featured on their Today Show appearance!). And where else can you find "MetalShop," a barbershop-style rendition of heavy metal tunes like "Purple Haze" and "Teenage Wasteland." A must for all fans of a cappella humor.

****
A combination of wit, comedy, original compositions, and favorite oldies, the first CD from Da Vinci's Notebook is a prize find. Their song "Liposuction" is an amusing commentary on the "nip and tuck" society, "Metal Shop" puts familiar 80s and 90s alternative music to the tune of barber shop singing, and "I Dream of Jeannie" is a cute a capella rendering of the theme music from the TV hit. Of the oldies songs, my favorite is "Blue Moon" -- it's sweet, frankly, and the boys' voices shine through this song. In general, this album is lots of fun and a great listen. My recommendation for any a capella fan is to buy this album and keep an eye out for their new CD, which should be more widely available in January of 2000. Their new songs are even wittier, more satyrical, and utterly impossible to get out of your head. You can also buy the new disc, "The Life and Times of Mike Flanning" now at live shows (where I just bought mine).
