Da mesma forma que conheci os Gals & Pals em 1964, escondidos no meio do suplemento de uma gravadora, eu ainda mantinha um programa de Jazz na mesma Rádio Imperial de Petrópolis em 1984 quando, num pacote que chegou à emissora veio esse fantástico disco do Rare Silk, uma das melhores surpresas que tive, musicalmente, naquele ano de 1984. O Album, intitulado "New Weave" (Polydor/Polygram) trazia para o Brasil a voz maravilhosa do grupo vocal Rare Silk, formado por Gaile Gillespie, Marguerite Juenemann, Marylynn Gillespie e Todd Buffa, uma formação absolutamente rara, ou seja: 3 vozes femininas e uma masculina. Infelizmente, a excelente etiqueta Palo Alto Records, da Califórnia, não tinha representação no Brasil e a vendagem dos poucos exemplares que para aqui vieram, uma vez esgotada, não foi reposta, ou seja: UM VINYL DOS DISCOS DO RARE SILK É UM QUADRO DE PICASSO - OBRA RARISSIMA!

(Depois eles gravaram mais um Album, entitulado "American Eyes", julho/85 que permaneceu inédito no Brasil, mas já está disponível no blog).

This is easily one of my all time favorites. If you like vocal jazz with a great band doing great songs, this is it. I bought it on LP twenty years ago from a specialty record store and it still sounds terrific! Spectacular! Do what you can to get this overlooked treasure. The only question I have is whatever happened to Rare Silk and why didn't they get more attention?

Bem, a dúvida do gringo é a mesma que eu tenho: como é que um conjunto fantástico como o RARE SILK simplesmente "evapora" sem deixar traços?
Num dos vários "workshops" que freqüentei sobre arranjos vocais nos USA, conheci o TODD BUFFA, que ministrou um dia de aulas;  tive pouco contato com ele, um cara genial que, além de ser um excelente músico e arranjador, canta muito bem, tem uma voz linda, como se constata no disco postado. Eu acho que a atitude radical de só cantar Jazz, e não fazer concessões, foi o que acabou com o Rare Silk, porque os Manhattan Transfer e os New York estão aí vivinhos da silva e vão muito bem, obrigado.

A way hipper record than you'd guess from a group with a name like "Rare Silk" -- and some of the best group jazz vocalese recorded in the 80s!
The group is a quartet of voices -- 3 female, 1 male -- and they come together in a style that's far less hokey than most of the other practictioners of this mode at the time - - a timeless sort of hipster approach that's really got a lot of the same sort of
energy as Mark Murphy on Muse! Backing is small combo jazz on all numbers, with some really sweet keyboards on a few of the best tracks -- and titles include versions of Flip Nunez's "Happying", Freddie Hubbard's "Red Clay", Richie Cole's "New York Afternoon" Chick Corea's "Spain", Stanley Turrentine's "Sugar", and Eddie Harris' "You Know It's Wrong".

O Rare Silk, diferentemente do Manhattan Transfer, do New York Voices ou do The Ritz, seus contemporâneos, diferia de todos eles num ponto básico: seu negócio era cantar exclusivamente jazz "straight ahead". Enquanto  outros grupos incursionavam pelo pop, pelos "standards", bossa nova, etc. o RARE SILK se colocava, em termos de atitude, ao ao lado dos históricos Les Doubles Six - O NOSSO NEGÓCIO É JAZZ! A "pegada" do RARE SILK é fantástica, lembrando os bons e velhos tempos do "bebop": são raçudos, cantam prá fora, harmonias complicadíssimas, em velocidades alucinantes,sem errar uma nota. O vocalista e arranjador TODD BUFFA é um monstro. (As partituras deste álbum são encontradas num site especializado, na Net - mas o preço é salgado...O Buffa vende caro o talento). OURO EM PÓ!

RARE SILK
O "camaleônico" RARE SILK começou como trio vocal feminino, com as vocalistas Marguerite Juenemann e as irmãs Mary Lynn e Gaile Gillaspie. Depois, com a adesão do vocalist Todd Buffa, se transformaram em quarteto misto. Mais tarde, Marguerite foi cuidar da carreira solo e deixou o grupo que, com os remanescentes, voltou a ser um trio - desta vez misto. Depois...acabou.

ALBUM REVIEW
Rare Silk, a sensational jazz vocal ensemble that I wish was still performing. The Black and Blue CD is even harder to find than New Weave. I travelled a lot years ago and every city I went to I went to stores looking for this CD (I had/have it in cassette) to complete my Rare Silk collection. The opening cut "Automatic Girl" is my favorite; to this day that tune stays with me in my head. Every cut is is a winner, no fillers on this recording. Good luck in finding the CD version...

MINHA OPINIÃO: este é o terceiro e último álbum do RARE SILK, desta vez como trio vocal misto. Os arranjos, a sonoridade e a performance do grupo, a exemplo dos álbuns anteriores, é excelente. Mas o que seria do verde se todos gostassem do azul? Eu, por exemplo, não compartilho o entusiasmo do M.Picardal em relação ao repertório do álbum. Na minha opinião, são músicas descartáveis que:[a] nada têm de jazz; [b] têm pop demais; [c] não têm nenhuma qualidade. A opção de mudar do jazz de altíssima qualidade que cantavam para esse - digamos - "pop modernoso", talvez tenha determinado o encerramento da carreira do grupo. Com um repertório desses, nem mesmo os "Four Freshmen" teriam ido adiante...

RARE SILK : this is a gorgeous performance of GIRL TALK, when they were just a vocal trio. The girls sing GIRL TALK, accompanyied by the BENNY GOODMAN´S combo, at the Budokan Jazz Festival(Tokyo, Japan, 1980). The pianist is the great TEDDY WILSON.

RARE SILK : AMERICAN EYES

Ontem, ao apresentar o Album "NEW WEAVE", eu disse tudo o que tinha a dizer a respeito do RARE SILK, do qual me tornei fã-de-carteirinha a partir daquele álbum. Ao preparar a postagem do disco de hoje, AMERICAN EYES, que comprei num sebo em New York há mais de 20 anos, no escuro, sem ouvir, por "olho grande de colecionador", achei a qualidade do repertório inferior.
Chamo, todavia, a atenção para o detalhe de que o "combo" que os acompanha neste álbum, é mais poderoso ainda do que o do anterior;
basta conferir os nomes dos gigantes que compõem o verdadeiro "dream team".

Para comentar o disco, deixo a bola com o conceituado crítico americano Scott Yanow que, a despeito da minha opinião pessoal sobre o repertório ser mais fraco, se mantém firme na posição de grande admirador do grupo:
"Rare Silk is an astounding jazz ensemble with arrangements as difficult as Gene Puerling's, and a sound to match Puerling's
"Singer's Unlimited." This group is amazing, Vocal Jazz reminiscant of Manhattan Transfer, in my opinion. A little Brazilian
vibe is mixed in for good measure .
For a short time, Rare Silk looked as if it was going to be a significant jazz vocal group. Rare Silk, which consisted of Gaile
Gillaspie, Marylynn Gillaspie, Todd Buffa and Marguerite Juenemann (replaced by Barbara Reeves), started out as a swing-oriented group in the vein of The Pied Pipers and (even with the inclusion of a male member) The Andrews Sisters.
They appeared with Benny Goodman at the 1980 Playboy Jazz Festival. During the next few years, the ensemble modernized their
style to include both bop and funkier material, recording for Polydor (1982) and Palo Alto (1985-86);
Their rendition to Watch what happens and 'Round midnight" are landmarks in the vocal arrangement grounds.
