DE CASTRO SISTERS
As irmãs Peggy, Cherie e Babbete iniciaram sua trajetória em Cuba, onde nasceram. Sua atuação nos luxuosos cassinos de Havana foi o ponto de partida para a carreira nos Estados Unidos. Em 1945 foram para Miami e de lá para Hollywood, onde
se tornaram "darlings" de Carmem Miranda e Bob Hope. Além de "figurinhas fáceis" na TV americana e nos filmes da "Brazilian Bombshell", as DeCastro atuaram em dezenas de outros filmes; além disso, deram voz a um sem número de bichinhos dos sensacionais desenhos de Walt Disney. Como já eram "do ramo" atuaram também nos cassinos de Las Vegas. As DeCastro estiveram em atividade até o final dos anos 90.
(*) OS números da vendagem de sua gravação do clássico "Teach me Tonight" foram impressionantes: 5 milhões de cópias, um assombro, na época.

DeCastro Sisters was a Cuban female vocal trio, which consisted of the siblings Peggy, Cherie and Babette. The group first gained attention in Cuba for their flamboyant nightclub act. When they moved to Miami in 1945, the sisters became
protégées of Brazilian singer Carmen Miranda, who put them in the film "Copacabana." The DeCastro Sisters performed their three-part harmony on the first live broadcast of the Los Angeles television station KTLA, following an introduction by Bob Hope. They hit the big time when their 1954 song, "Teach Me Tonight," sold more than 5 million copies. Over the years, the ''Cuban Andrews Sisters," built a library of songs, including "Boom Boom Boomerang," "Too Late Now," "Snowbound for Christmas" and "Cowboys Don't Cry." They provided many of the bird and animal voices in Walt Disney's "Song of the South," and became a popular singing act in Las Vegas nightclubs and hotels. In 1997, the trio performed on KTLA's 50th anniversary show, although Babette (who died in 1993) was replaced by their cousin Olgita DeCastro Marino. Three years later, The DeCastro Sisters were inducted into the Casino Legends
Hall of Fame as "Las Vegas Living Legends."

ALBUM COMMENTS: Most popular in the 50s, the de Castros began a decade earlier as a Latin act, which they virtually dropped when they were signed by the otherwise hillbilly-oriented Abbott label. Besides 31 (big band accompanied) period hits, "Teach Me" includes a thick photo album with the history of these 3 Cuban rich girls who shared an amazing musical career stretching from the 1940s to the present day (at least as of 1999, when the CD was released), from Miami to Hollywood to New York City. Sneaking off from their gig at Miami's Clover Club to sing (and record)
with Tito Puente's band, being invited to Hollywood by Walt Disney to sing background vocals on "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" ‹it's an amazing musical story. The title tune was on the flip side of the supposed-to-be hit "It's Love." A Cleveland disc jockey turned it over, played it and got bags of mail. The "suggestive" tune became the Sisters' biggest hit. Novelty and pop tunes like "Boom Boom Boomerang," "Cuckoo In The Clock," "Rockin' and Rollin' In Hawaii," "Cowboys Don't Cry," "Don't Call Me Sweetie," "Old Timer's Tune" the upbeat "Biddle-Dee Bop" and "You Take Of Me
(I'll Take Care of You;" torch songs like "No One to Blame But You," "Give Me time," "If I Ever Fall In Love," "It's Yours," and the country tune "That Little Word Called Love"we've never heard most of these songs, but we like them. They are as full of energy, spirit and innocence as the 1950s, and the improbable de Castro Sisters!

MINHA OPINIÃO: Tenho um reparo a fazer ao comentário aí de cima: a ousadia (para a época) da capa do álbum não sugere nem um pouco a alegada "innocence" das "sabrosas muchachas", antes pelo contrário...No que diz respeito à música das DeCastro, vale destacar que sua sonoridade é bastante distinta dos trios da "vintage"; a melodia é cantada pela segunda voz, enquanto a primeira e a terceira se encarregam da harmonia, com nítida influência dos "barbershop quartets." Essa distribuição de vozes, resulta numa sonoridade mais grave e encorpada, ao contrário das "Andrews Sisters", por exemplo, que atribuem a melodia à primeira voz. As DeCastro Sisters se inserem entre os grandes trios femininos vocais da época de ouro da grande música norte-americana.
