Alan Copeland é pouco conhecido do grande público, embora seja um nome de respeito entre os músicos e produtores de discos, como arranjador de corais e grupos vocais. Só o fato de ter sido integrante dos MODERNAIRES, em uma de suas formações, já seria mais que suficiente pra garantir a AC um atestado de "bons antecedentes".

ALAN COPELAND
Alan started his career early on, as one of the Choir Boys in the famous Robert Mitchell Boy Choir. From 1948 to 1952 he joined "The Modernaires" and was on Bob Crosby's Radio Show five nights a week, along with the Andrews Sisters, Dick Haymes, and Jerry Gray's Orchestra. In 1952 through 1956 he was a regular on "The Bob Crosby TV Show" five days a week for five years. From 1957 to 1960 he joined the "Your Hit Parade" TV Show in New York. Then from 1965-69 he signed with the Modernaires for "The Red Skelton TV Show" and won a Grammy in 1968 with the "Alan Copeland Singers" for Mission Impossible-Norwegian Wood. Known for his vocal arranging, Alan has written charts for Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme and was the choral director for Bing Crosby's Christmas TV Shows for over two decades. Since 1995, Alan has rejoined the Modernaires and still performs on a part-time basis with them.

ALBUM REVIEW
Count Basie was impressed by Alan Copeland's work as choral director and approached him to do this album. The collaboration was quite successful as expected. Alan conducted and did all the arrangements. On some tracks the rhythm section and voices are aided by some of the Basie sidemen. This album also contains some Roy Eldridge's solos. His muted horn is a heard on "Until I met You". There are solos by Lockjaw Davis and Al Grey on "One For My Baby" and "Call Me". Pretty nice stuff.

MINHA OPINIÃO: resultou num álbum muito agradável esta união das forças de Basie e Copeland. Excelente repertório de "standards" , arranjos de orquestra e vocalizações "low profile", sem grandes peripécias vocais, tudo bem dentro do "jeito-Basie-de-ser". Um luxo.

COUNT BASIE
August 21, 1904 – April 26, 1984) was an American jazz pianist, organist, bandleader, and composer. Widely regarded as one of the most important jazz bandleaders of his time, Basie led his popular Count Basie Orchestra for almost fifty years. Many notable musicians came to prominence under his direction, including tenor saxophonists Lester Young and Herschel Evans, trumpeters Buck Clayton and Harry "Sweets" Edison and singers Jimmy Rushing and Joe Williams. Basie's theme songs were One O'Clock Jump and April In Paris.

JOE WILLIAMS
Joe Williams (born December 12, 1918 in Cordele, Georgia; died March 29, 1999 in Las Vegas, Nevada) was a well-known jazz vocalist, and an elegant and sophisticated baritone singing a mixture of blues, ballads, popular songs, and jazz standards.
In 1942 jazz great Lionel Hampton hired him to fill in for his regular vocalist, both for the Hampton orchestra's home performances at the Tic Toc Club in Boston and for their cross-country tours. Williams's work with Hampton ended when the band's former singer returned, but by that time Williams was in great demand, his fame particularly
burgeoning back in Chicago. At the age of 35, he got his big break when in 1954 he was hired as the male vocalist for with Count Basie Orchestra, 1954 thru 1961, garnering some of the best exposure a blues and jazz singer could have.

ALBUM COMMENTS
The extraordinary jazz vocal group, Lambert, Hendricks & Ross had debuted in 1957 with Sing a Song of Basie during which they recreated his orchestra with their overdubbed voices. That album was so successful that the following year they were able to actually team up with the Basie band. Frank Foster put down on paper the original head arrangements of the '30s and '40s for the orchestra, leaving space for the vocalists to recreate the original solos. The result is a colorful and swinging set. Best is a version of "Goin' to Chicago Blues" that has Joe Williams taking his original vocal while Lambert, Hendricks & Ross sing around him.
