CUARTETO D´AIDA
Durante anos andei à procura de alguma coisa do "Cuarteto D´Aida", um dos mais importantes conjuntos vocais cubanos de todos os tempos. Finalmente encontrei um velho álbum que, certamente, não é o mais representativo na curta discografia do grupo.(Ainda estou buscando o que gravaram ao vivo com a orquestra de Chico O`Farrill). Duas das componentes do quarteto fizeram brilhantes carreiras individuais: Helene Burke e Omara Portuondo. Mora Secada é tia de Jon Secada e Haidee Portuondo abandonou a carreira, casou e foi morar em Miami. A mentora intelectual e responsável por todos os arranjos vocais, ao longo da trajetória do grupo, foi a pianista AIDA DIESTRO. A vocalista Teté Caturla era a substituta habitual, em caso de impedimento das "titulares" e assumiu a responsabilidade pelos arranjos, depois da morte de Aida. Ao longo do tempo as modificações do "line-up" foram muitas e até hoje o Cuarteto ainda é atuante.

CUARTETO D´AIDA
Directed by Havana-born pianist Aida Diestro (1928-1973), Cuarteto d'Aida was one of Cuba's most successful singing groups of the 1950s and'60s. Originally featuring vocalists Omara and Haydee Portuondo, Elena Burke and Moraima Secada, Cuarteto d'Aida brought a new sensibility to Cuba's pop music with their sophisticated vocals and swing arrangements. They performed their songs for enthusiastic audiences in South and North America and Europe and recorded with influential Afro-Cuban trumpet player Arturo "Chico" O'Farrill. Cuarteto d'Aida remained together until the early 1970s. As members left to pursue solo careers, Diestro enlisted highly talented women singers to replace them. Even the death of Diestro in 1973 failed to put an
end to Cuarteto d'Aida. The group continues to be active today. The original quartet recorded their sole album in 1957. Although Haydee Portuondo left music and settled in the United States, her sister, Omara, continues to be heralded as the "first lady of Cuban music." Burke passed away, after a long bout with AIDS, on August 18, 2002.

ALBUM REVIEW
This album was recorded in Havana in 1982, and it's got a really unique sound. There are 7 tracks fron the 1982 LP, and extra "2 bonus tracks" transferred from a cassette, also from the early 1980's. The groovy Cuarteto D'Aida were sort of a Cuban version of the Quarteto Em Cy -- in that they took a basic American jazz harmony vocal style (from groups like the Four Freshmen or Hi-Los), and gave it a all-female reading, with Latin grooves to change up the sound nicely! The legendary Omara Portuondo is in the group here.

MINHA OPINIÃO - este precioso álbum vai fazer a alegria dos colecionadores de raridades, ainda que não seja o melhor do legendário "Cuarteto D´Aida". Já ouvi outras gravações com arranjos vocais bem mais instigantes. Ainda assim é altamente recomendável, por contar uma parte da história dos conjuntos vocais cubanos.
(*)As vocalistas nesta gravação não me parecem que sejam as originais que, segundo a Wikepedia, só gravaram juntas no álbum com Chico O´Farrill. Mas as informações disponíveis na Net são precárias. Na capa do álbum aparecem apenas 3 cantoras: uma delas, com certeza é Omara Portuondo. Qualquer informação adicional será, como sempre, muito benvinda.
