TAKE SIX: The most wonderful time of the year

TAKE SIX
------------
ALBUM REVIEW
Recording a holiday album is one of the most confounding things any musical act can do. The huge selection of  Christmas songs have already multiple versions, which make holiday recordings a challenging: it’s difficult to accomplish something truly new, and you’re inevitably going to face comparisons with others who have tried their hands at the same tunes. As a result, it can actually be more difficult for a holiday album to receive a positive critical response, because there’s a lot more room for apples to apples comparisons. But, as we can find out in his brand new Xmas CD, Take 6 overcomes all these issues and the album  sounds warm and familiar—to conjure up holiday memories, and to be easy to sing along to. On these notes, the album is, indeed, quite successful. Besides, the guys have impeccable tuning and harmonies. Every solo is a strong one, and the blend on each choral segment is impeccable. For the closing track, Take 6 welcomes Shelea Frazier in for a guest solo and piano performance. Frazier’s voice is a welcome shift from the more homogenous male jazz sound that dominates the album up to this point, and yet I can’t help questioning the decision to have her play piano on an a cappella album. As usual, a "must listen to".

Bem que o Take Six podia adotá-lo. OURO EM PÓ!

LISA ONO( w/ voices): Look To The Rainbow (Jazz Standards from L.A.)

LISA ONO
Minha resposta: ouça o CD e você vai entender a razão...
-------------------
LISA ONO: Look To The Rainbow (Jazz Standards from L.A.)
This album was produced by Lisa and Bill Cantos, who sang and played piano on the 2006 Soul & Bossa. Bill Cantos, based in Los Angeles, is a singer, composer, pianist and an arranger, and one of the main artist of the current AOR scene. He has performed with Sergio Mendes, and also known for his detailed knowledge of Brazilian music. Dori Caymmi, based in California and one of the leaders of Brazilian music, introduced Bill to Lisa, and is also on the album as an arranger and a guitar player for two songs. The sound concept of this album is, “Lisa Ono with chorus”. Every tune has a chorus, and two of the songs features Take 6. Although this album is the first experience for her to perform with a real chorus, Lisa always loved to listen to chorus groups such as Quarteto em Cy, Os Cariocas from Brazil, or The Hi-Lo’s from U.S.A. Also it features songs with a theme of moon, rainbow, rain, a motif of sky, and with the heartwarming sound of the chorus that is naturally spread all over the album, it gives you a vivid impression of Los Angeles’ big blue sky.

------------------

TAKE SIX: We wish you a Merry Chrismas

EDITORIAL REVIEW
The follow-up to the Grammy-winning He Is Christmas, We Wish You a Merry Christmas finds Take 6 at their finest. The sextet's a cappella melodies paved the way for R&B boy groups Boyz II Men and may recall Manhattan Transfer's multipart harmonic convergence, yet they continue to be unmatched in their ingenious take on popular jazz-vocal gospel. This outing finds the Seventh Day Adventist-affiliated outfit firmly locked into their signature vocal blend, augmenting their doo-wop a cappella styling with the occasional piano, light-handed bass, guitar, drums, and the cool blue saxophone of Kirk Whalum. A few songs are embellished by a triad of female harmonies and Brian McKnight (brother of founding member Claude McKnight) appears on "The Christmas Song." Chestnuts like "Silver Bells," "Go Tell It on the Mountain," and "Joy to the World," while happily recognizable, ring out especially merry as rendered by these fresh fellows.
~Paige La Grone (Amazon.com)
------------
MINHA OPINIÃO: O Take 6 já havia gravado um álbum de Natal que me parecia definitivo: HE IS CHRISTMAS.

Lindo demais...

TAKE SIX: Brothers

---------
TAKE SIX
Dispensa apresentação, não é mesmo?
---------
BROTHERS
This album completes the group's migration away from their a cappella jazz roots, a trend that began with the departure of Mervyn Warren. The songs are all accompanied R&B (with the exce ption of a brief a cappella interlude on "Can't StopThinking 'Bout You"). Thematically, though, the songs remainmostly subtle Christian texts, where the listener may only realize the meaning by seeing capitalized "Me,""You" and "He" in the liner notes. The double entendre extends to the album title as well. Founding member Mark Kibble brought in brother Joey to take Warren's place several years ago, and on this album Claude McKnight III's brother Brian plays a major role. Brother Brian had participated in one song ontheir last recording "Join the Band," but here he is writing, producing and playing instruments (at times incollaboration with others) on six of the 10 songs - nearly a seventh member of the band. The album is very tight, clean, smooth and pleasant, but to those of us who remain dazzled
by their unaccompanied efforts it just doesn't seem"special."
---------

TAKE SIX: HE IS CHRISTMAS

TAKE SIX
-------------
TAKE SIX
He Is Christmas! is the best album Take 6 have ever produced (which is saying something!), and it's a shame I can only ever play it for one month a year without getting funny looks - which I endure bravely when I put it on in the middle of April! You will not hear a version of Silent Night that even comes close to this one, and it is the delicate balance between the radically reworked (Away In A Manger, Little Drummer Boy, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen) and the more straightforward renditions of anthems (Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, O Come All
Ye Faithful) that makes this the pivotal seasonal recording. The tongue-in-cheek Take 6-isms in the latter two (the half-bar C7/b9/#11 chord in Hark!, the key change in Come) never fail to make me smile and shake my head in disbelief. And just listen to what they do to the high school choir staple Amen! A capella music doesn't get any better than this.
(Source: Amazon.com, by a happy Customer...)
-----------

TAKE SIX - STANDARDS

TAKE SIX
----------
ALBUM REVIEW
Very few groups have the ability to cross musical platforms with as much success and as smoothly as Take 6. This group in the 80’s brought a form of music back that had not been heard massively for at least two decades. They have always been rooted in Gospel, and can very well be considered one of the four fathers of Gospel Jazz. There beautiful harmony has been heard on R&B songs as well as jazz tunes. The latest project “The Standard” is a mixture of Gospel, R&B, Jazz and classic acappela harmony. They cover classics like “Seven Steps To Heaven” by Miles Davis with the help of Al Jarreau, Jon Hendricks and Till Bronner some other special guests are, Ella Fitzgerald, George Benson, Aaron Neville, Brian McKnight. The song that caught my eye was the duet with Ms. Ella Fitzgerald even though we lost her 12 years ago with today’s technology they have her voice and Take 6 sings back up on one of
her widely known songs “A Tisket A Tasket” this is reminiscent of when Natalie Cole released a re-mastered version of “Unforgettable” Featuring a duet with he father Nat King Cole. This version of “A Tisket A Tasket” introduces the song to a new audience overall this CD is eclectic and it works Take 6 has done it again.

ALBUM RELEASE
Product Description
A cappella powerhouse Take 6 marks a new jazz vocal milestone with The Standard. Winners of 10 GRAMMY? Awards, 10 Dove Awards, one Soul Train Award and two NAACP Image Award nominations, the influential sextet - Mark Kibble, Claude V. McKnight III, Dr. Cedric Dent, David Thomas, Alvin Chea and Joey Kibble - raises the bar with a recording of mostly jazz (and some R&B) standards, including "Straighten Up and Fly Right," "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," "Someone To Watch Over Me," "What's Going On" and "Windmills of Your Mind." The Standard features guest appearances by veteran jazzmen George Benson, Al Jarreau, Jon Hendricks, Roy Hargrove, Till Brönner and others, as well as R&B luminaries Aaron Neville and Brian McKnight (Claude's brother). Take 6 gives definitive vocal treatments to such jazz classics as "Sweet Georgia Brown,"
"Straighten Up and Fly Right" with vocalist/guitarist George Benson, "Someone to Watch Over Me" with trumpeter Roy Hargrove, and "Seven Steps to Heaven" with Jon Hendricks, Al Jarreau and German flugelhornist Till Brönner (featuring new lyrics by Jon Hendricks). The Standard's crowning glory is a version of "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," Ella Fitzgerald's signature song - created in the studio using her original vocal from the classic 1938 Decca Records 78. Other highlights include "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans" with Aaron Neville, Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" with Brian McKnight, Quincy Jones' "Grace" and "Windmills of Your Mind" (from the 1968 film The Thomas Crown Affair).

-----------

TAKE SIX: MOODY´S MOOD FOR LOVE

---------
JAMES MOODY´s improvised solo over the harmony of "I´m in the mood for love" was so inpired that became a brand new tune, entitled "Moody´s mood for love", with english lyrics. Although recorded by many jazz singers and groups, this version by Brian McKnight, Patti Austin and Take Six, arranged by Quincy Jones is the best of all. Absolutely AMAZING!

TAKE SIX: JOIN THE BAND

TAKE SIX
-----------------
TAKE SIX
Take six' bio has been posted many times before. Thus, the group doesn't need further introduction: they are old and very good friends of this blog.
-----------------
-----------------
ALBUM COMMENTS:
Great sound men, great sound! Take six did a great job on this album. The top harmonies, build on other high harmonies, which is typical Take six style was definitly seen on this album. Great arrangements, and great songs. I would have loved to hear some cool harmonies that travel under the melodic line. Too often vocal ensembles concentrate too hard on the use of piercing high harmonies. Especially in slow love ballads. Although take six does a good job of not letting the bass line get muddy, they really need some great baritone lines instead of so many high harmonies. Great solo's and even better energy.
(By Matt DiCamillo)
------------------
O Take Six É PERFEITO!

TAKE SIX: SO MUCH 2 SAY

TAKE SIX
começava a história do grupo Take 6.
-----------------
TAKE SIX
This award-winning Christian sextet broke new ground in a cappella in the '80s, paving the way for the popular revival of R&B vocal groups. Their jazz harmonies, original songs and vocal pyrotechnics represent some of the best a cappella ever recorded. Back in 1980, Claude McKnight formed an a cappella quartet, The Gentlemen's Estate Quartet, at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama, where he was a freshman. He auditioned fellow students for the hobby group. The Gentlemen were rehearsing in a campus bathroom, getting ready for a performance, when Mark Kibble walked by and heard them singing. He joined the harmonizing, adding a fifth part, and ended up singing with them onstage that very night. Mark later invited Mervyn Warren to join the group, and the sound of Take 6 was born. Although the sonic structure was now firmly in place, the name was not; the group performed under the moniker "Alliance." The group performed in local churches and on campus over the next years, with members changing due to college's inevitable comings and goings. In 1985, the lower half of the group (bass, baritone, and second tenor) left upon graduating. At that time, Alvin Chea, Cedric Dent, and David Thomas joined. The group was signed to Warner Brothers, Nashville in 1987, and quickly changed its name to "Take 6" after a name search revealed that "Alliance" was already being used. Take 6's swinging, harmony-rich gospel sound attracted a flurry of attention, and the group went on to record or appear with a number of luminaries, including Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald and Stevie Wonder. In 1991 Mervyn Warren left the group
to pursue a career as a producer, and Joey Kibble, Mark's younger brother, was invited to round out the vocal lineup. The group added instrumentation to their purely a cappella sound beginning with the record "So Much To Say".
-----------
ALBUM COMMENTS:
On “So Much 2 Say,” Take 6 deftly avoids the sophomore jinx that sometimes comes with a second album and instead surges past and defies expectations. “So Much 2 Say,” which opens the album, is a masterpiece of scat singing, combined with smooth, long musical lines that break up the staccato abruptness of the speedy vocals. The six members of Take 6 are breathtaking in the assurance of their performance here, and it only gets better from there. “I L-O-V-E U” is a superb dance tune (try it!) and a funky, beat-filled tribute to God’s love. “Something Within Me” starts out like a traditional a cappella gospel tune, but after the first minute or so, transforms itself into a speedy, finger-snapping combination of soaring solo vocals (by which member, it doesn’t say) grounded by the insistent, propulsive group work of the other five members. They even manage to work in some island flavor ("yah, mon,” they sing, suddenly switching to clearly Caribbean accents) here, and it’s charming. “Come Unto Me” is reverent and crystalline in its purity. This a cappella
exercise is utterly mesmerizing and a testament to the powerful talents of these six men, both as vocalists and as arrangers (they arrange most of their own music, not to mention writing a lot of it as well). “Sunday’s on the Way” is a hilarious tale of Satan having a party in hell to celebrate the crucifixion: Well, the demons were planning on having a little party one night (By Dennis Thompson)
----------------

Their eponymous debut album, released in 1988, won them two Grammy Awards and resulted in top ten appearances on both the Billboard Contemporary Jazz and Contemporary Christian Charts. Take 6's swinging, harmony-rich gospel sound attracted a flurry of attention, and the group went on to record or appear with a number of luminaries, including Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald and Stevie Wonder. In 1991 Mervyn Warren left the group to pursue a career as a producer, and Joey Kibble, Mark's younger brother, was invited to round out the vocal lineup. The group added instrumentation to their purely a cappella sound beginning with the record "So Much To Say"; "He Is Christmas," "Join The Band" and "Brothers" continued their streak of success, and Take 6 amassed a total of seven Grammys and eight Dove awards, as well as topping the Downbeat Magazine's Reader's and Critic's poll for seven years' consecutively! Take 6's 1998 release, "So Cool," brings the group back to its a cappella origins. The group will be touring worldwide beginning in October, and will be appearing on various television entertainment programs as well as high-profile commercials ("Gatorade" with Michael Jordan, as well as others). This is the tenth anniversary of their first release, and from their modest beginnings as an a cappella gospel group to their current status as multiple Grammy Award winners, Take 6 has redefined the standards for vocal music. Indeed, the vocal group craze that's currently sweeping the R&B world was touched off in part by the revelatory
emergence of Take 6 in 1988. Hot contemporary R&B acts like "Boyz II Men" and "Coming of Age" cite Take 6 as a major influence. The group themselves, never content to rest on their substantial laurels, continues to grow and evolve; one of the members even earned his Doctorate in Music! Their talent, hard work and Christian faith has earned them their place as one of the most enduring and best-loved groups in all a cappella.

De repente entram em cena os ditos cujos, cantando exatamente o alucinante arranjo de "If We Never Needed The Lord Before".
(Cabernet), cubanos (Vocal Sampling), americanos brancos (Take that, Glad), afro-americanos (Boyz II men), mistos (Rockapella) e, naturalmente, brasileiros (BR-6),tentando reproduzir as vocalizações do Take Six.

ALBUM REVIEW:
"Take 6's Jazz-Gospel a capella ensemble singing, is a natural evolution from Jazz, Gospel, and Doo-Wop, with a bit of Barbershop thrown-in. It's been noted that this, the first and eponymous Take 6 album, won the group Emmys in both the gospel and jazz categories. The honor was deserved on both counts, as their music somehow manages to straddle jazz and gospel without sounding either derivative or precious. This is strikingly original music, by an explosively talented group of six young men. The fact that the songs are a cappella makes their achievement in this album all the more laudable. With all these talks, who needs instruments?"
