THE REAL GROUP: Live in Stockholm

THE REAL GROUP
-----------
ALBUM REVIEW
This CD has no equal and The Real Group has no peers. It is the single greatest live recording of small-group vocal jazz ever made. To give it less than 5 stars would indicate a lack of appreciation for vocal jazz, poor taste for vocal jazz, or not much knowledge/experience in listening to the genre. Folks, Manhattan Transfer cuts live and in studio, in general, are some of the most robotic and undynamic tracks out there. They have great technical skill and some complex arrangements. That's all. Listening to more than a couple songs at a sitting makes me want to fill my ears with cotton. The same can be said about New York Voices (Manhattan Transfer Lite). Hey, let's sing perfect disharmonious chords with some interesting resolutions--all with the same rhythm, phrasing, dynamics and words. Both groups are extremely monophonic, which ultimately makes for a boring listen. The *only* vocal jazz group I have ever heard that holds a candle to The Real Group is
Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross. They are not in the same category as The Real Group (NYV and MT aren't really in the same category as TRG either, since Real Group is completely a cappella, and save some exceptions, NYV and MT aren't). Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross are supreme soloists, with some of the greatest live-recorded scats ever put on track. Throw in Swingin' Till the Girls on their compilation CD or live CD and check out what happens 45 seconds into the track. Wow. Their small swing band musicians, who they hand-picked, play some incredible stuff. Songs like Cloudburst (which NYV tried to duplicate but couldn't) and other classics will always be associated to the LHR recordings. The group's weakness? Their dynamics and blend are not as good as The Real Group's (nor should they be). They couldn't do songs completely a cappella without losing their kick because of the nature of the group--3 people. If they had 2 more members, we'd have a different story. Even then, they wouldn't have the same sensitivity to dynamic as The Real Group does. It says something when Jon Hendricks actually WRITES the liner notes to The Real Group's "Unreal!" (Other reviewers may not be aware of this.) It also says something when he writes, "I wish I were in this group." When the best of the best expresses this kind of compliment, what does it say about the group? The scatting of TRG and LHR is not the same, nor should it be. In group vocal jazz, scatting is secondary. The primary concern of an a cappella vocal jazz group is being able to structure complex arrangements around extremely controlled group dynamic without losing pitch or rhythm without the aid of a band. Jon Hendricks realizes this, as well as most other people who are actually involved in the vocal aspect of ensemble jazz. It is the goal of an a cappella jazz group to *not* be completely tight; doing so would make the phrasing stiff. ANYONE that listened to the Real Group's first album, Debut, would realize this. The recording was basically live in-studio, and has MT's type of tightness and technical bravado. The result? A boring listen! Basically TRG put out an album of MT's skill as their debut album. What they can do now, well over 15 years later, is sublime. Now, each member of TRG sings as a soloist, with the dynamics of an ensemble. Their phrasing is much more loose. This is what makes the recording have no peers. Every cut, from Splanky to Den Lyssnande Maria is gold. What this group can do without the help of a band is unparallel. Listen to the countertenor and soprano in Strawberry Fields: they just hang notes in the air, each with their own dynamic, creating an incredible bed of sound while the alto sings the melody. Likewise, listen to how the alto, tenor, and countertenor intertwine their parts in Waltz for Debby. Listen to how they are all able to change tempo and volume together [especially when the bass is singing lyrical harmonies and not providing rhythm (e.g. When I Fall in Love and Den Lyssande)] while still remaining tight. Listen to the timbre of the bass when he IS providing rhythm. Check out the soprano's faux trumpet. Check out how the countertenor and alto's parts are intertwined. Listen to how the tenor glues the harmonies together. This stuff isn't easy to do kids. In fact, it has *never* been done before with this kind of skill up to this point.

Merci beacoup!

THE REAL GROUP: It don´t mean a thing

THE REAL GROUP - UNREAL

THE REAL GROUP

THE REAL GROUP
To our way of thinking The Real Group is the current jazz standard by which other groups must be judged. They are that good. The five formed the group in 1984. Generally they perform a cappella, but they have performed with symphony orchestras, big bands and choirs as well as other well known musicians. This album has been produced spçecifically for the U.S. market and takes several songs from prior releases. Based in Sweden and rarely coming to the US it has been tough for fans to see this fabulous quintet but now, for much cheaper than a airline ticket, one can have the next best thing by watch this live concert on your TV. Vocal harmony
heaven on earth!

ALBUM REVIEV
Whee! "The Flight Of The Foobirds" is chock full of delicious scat, "A Cappella In Acapulco" is not only alliteratively alluring but it will have your feet tapping for sure. "A Child Is Born" is nothing short of unreal! Hmm, there's a recording title there somewhere. The vocal trumpet on that one tune is plenty of reason enough to listen to Unreal! about a hundred times. It doesn't seem possible. What we have here is one of two cds released only for the Canadian and U.S. markets which includes some of the very finest of The Real Group. In addition to the dozen tunes sung in English, there are two Swedish folk songs. No, no, neither the Beatles nor Hoagy
Carmichael is Swedish but Anders Edenroth is, and shares three originals with us including the aforementioned "A Cappella In Acapulco."
(From www.singers.com)
---------------

THE REAL GROUP: No more blues

THE REAL GROUP: DEBUT

THE REAL GROUP
-------
THE REAL GROUP
This is Real Group´s debut album, recorded by the amazing Swedish vocal quintet in 1987. Pretty good stuff!
-------

THE REAL GROUP : NOTHING BUT THE REAL GROUP

THE REAL GROUP

---------------------
The Real Group

To our way of thinking The Real Group is the current jazz standard by which other groups must be judged. They are that good.
Each of the members was admitted to The Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm where they met. The five formed the group in 1984. Since the beginning of their professional career they have sold more than 200,000 albums, performed more than 1,000 live shows and worked with great musicians like George Martin, Bobby McFerrin, Barbara Hendricks and Toots Thielemans. Generally they perform a cappella, but they have performed with symphony orchestras, big bands and choirs as well as other well known musicians.
In a way it isn't a surprise, looking backward that these five musicians would be superb in their singing, for they are all
immensely talented. Margareta Jalkeus grew up in a musical family and began playing piano and singing at an early age.
Since twelve she has played harp with such proficiency that her skills have been utilized by some famous orchestras, when she
has time away from solo performance, that is. Katarina Stenstrom has been singing since she was eight years old. She played piano and studied cello for a while but it has been the vocals where her interests lie. She founded a band named Donna Lee which signed a contract with Polygram and has worked as a background vocalist for a number of Swedish artists. Anders Edenroth spent five years at The Royal Academy, planning to be a pianist. He met the group and became a singer instead. Anders Jalkeus was introduced to folk music by his parents and began to play the violin and piano at six years old. By the time he came to the Academy, he could play almost any instrument. At school his studies focused on singing and he
graduated as a cantor. His vocal interests have also extended toward several choirs with whom he's worked. Peder Karlsson, who loves books as much as music, plays guitar, piano, and loves the violin. That is a lot of musical background in one group!
Since their first recording in 1987, which was totally self produced, they have produced seven albums for the Swedish market,
one specifically for the U.S. market, Unreal, which takes several songs from prior releases, and one for the European market,
Get Real, which does similarly. Their recordings first made their mark in the larger a cappella world in 1994. We can tell,
for in 1995 they began winning an unprecedented string of CARA Awards with two that year, Best Contemporary Cover for "Dancing Queen" and Best Jazz Song for "Flight Of The Foo-birds." In l996 Margareta Jalkeus was awarded Best Female Vocalist. l997 was the year of The Real Group as far as CARAs go. They won Live Album of the Year, Best Original Pop Song, Best Jazz Song and Margareta won Best Female Vocalist for the second year in a row! Unreal! 1998 saw them win yet another award for Best Holiday Album.
It is our opinion that they are absolutely worthy of all the attention their performances and recordings have garnered.
Based in Sweden and rarely coming to the US it has been tough for fans to see this fabulous quintet but now, for much cheaper than a airline ticket, one can have the next best thing by watch this live concert on your TV. And the even better news is that this group is just as wonderful in performance as they are on their recordings and with high production values in both video and audio this is like having perhaps the world's very best a cappella group performing in your very own living room. Vocal harmony heaven on earth!
-----------------------
Album Comments:
We can't start with superlatives when describing the Real Group's work. Our thesaurus isn't infinite. Suffice it to say that they
are the premiere jazz a cappella group in Sweden. Well, maybe in Europe. Ok, ok, in the world. They open with a choral scat
introduction as they launch into an upbeat "It Don't Mean A Thing." Stevie Wonder's "Sir Duke" never had it so good. Sweet and slow harmonious interplay is the texture of "When I Fall In Love." Don't drift off into a reverie because (pow!)here's the well known "Chili Con Carne," and so we are alternately jazzed and beguiled by a dozen great tunes, all in English.
----------------------
O repertório do álbum é maravilhoso e me encantam especialmente as "renditions" da valsa-jazz "Very Early", de Bill Evans, de "Sir Duke" de Stevie Wonder" e o belo arranjo vocal de "There will never be another you".
