THE RONETTES: THE EARLY YEARS

THE RONETTES
Durante algum tempo The Ronettes
--------------
THE RONETTES
The Ronettes were another of the great girl groups of the 60's. Supported by their producer, Phil Spector, the Ronettes' star
shown bright in terms of record sales for three years before their songs fell off the charts. The group consisted of lead singer
Veronica "Ronnie" Bennett, her sister Estelle Bennett, and their cousin Nedra Talley. All of them were born in the mid to late 40's and all were from New York City. They began dancing and started to sing professionally while still in junior high in the late 50's. They were known as the Darling Sisters, and later as Ronnie and the Relatives they recorded some songs for Colpix which failed to chart. Eventually, they changed their name to the Ronettes. In the early 60's the Peppermint Lounge in New York City was the place to be. The house band there was Joey Dee and the Starliters, whose Peppermint Twist - Part I became a number one song. The girls put on party dresses and went there. While standing in line waiting to get in, the manager saw them and said "girls, you're late." They entered the Peppermint Lounge, started dancing there, and their act was solidified. They became regulars, and people in the music business began to notice them. They appeared in a movie with disk jockey Clay Cole, Twist Around The Clock. The Twist was a dance sensation, and the Bennett sisters and their cousin could twist with the best of them. They worked up the courage to call the hot young record producer, Phil Spector, and began working with him in 1962. Spector was enamored of Ronnie. He signed them to his Philles label. After some time in New York, Spector left for the West Coast and took the Ronettes with him. He had been successful with the Crystals and with some other artists, but now his attention was on
featuring Ronnie on his records. He used his contacts with Gerry Goffin, Carole King, Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, Barry Mann,
Cynthia Weil, and others in the Brill Building to come up with some songs. The first and biggest for the Ronettes was Be My Baby.
Spector was a meticulous producer and Ronnie was a very good rock-and-roll singer. On their songs they were usually backed by other musicians, some of whom would later go on to careers of their own as recording artists. These included Darlene Love, Nino Tempo, Sonny and Cher, Hal Blaine, and Leon Russell. Be My Baby was an instant hit, and went to number two in the Fall of 1963. Other hits followed: Baby, I Love You, [The Best Part Of] Breakin' Up, Do I Love You? and Walking In The Rain all were top forty songs in 1964. All were recorded at Spector's favorite recording studio, Gold Star in Los Angeles. The Ronettes travelled to England to tour with the Rolling Stones. While they were there the Beatles sought them out, and they became friends. They appeared in the T.A.M.I. show. Walking In The Rain, which had been recorded in one take, won a grammy for special effects.Phil Spector and Ronnie Bennett's relationship eventually developed into a full-fledged romance, culminating in their marriage in 1968 [and subsequent divorce, in 1974]. The energy between the two helped to make the Ronettes the success that they were. By 1965 Phil had turned his attentions to promoting other acts such as the Righteous Brothers, and the Ronettes' record label became less viable. Their record sales declined, although the Ronettes remained an enormously popular act.
They placed no more songs in the top forty. Although they were coming up with good material and still making good songs, their
records were not selling as well and they stopped recording altogether in 1966.Ronnie Spector continued her singing career,
at first with others and eventually as a solo act. The Ronettes produced some very good rock-and-roll songs and are remembered as one of the great girl groups of the 60's. Rightfully so, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. They changed the way female rock and roll looked and how it was performed.
---------
ALBUM COMMENTS
The early Ronettes songs weren't as immaculately produced or as evocative as Phil Spector's productions. Their sound was more
generic and resembled other girl groups like The Shirelles or Chiffons. They recorded for Colpix and Dimension during 1961 and 1962, with Ronnie Bennett doing most of the leads, while her sister Estelle and cousin Nedra added soothing harmonies and backgrounds. At times, as on "My Guiding Angel" or "You Bet I Would," they came close to the appealing mix of innocence and earnestness that characterized their later (and greatest) tracks. But despite getting material from such songwriters as Jackie DeShannon and Carole King, many of these cuts were more serviceable than classic. Still, this is the foundation for the sound that exploded in the mid-'60s.
---------
MINHA OPINIÃO - o album postado mostra as Ronettes ainda sob a direção de Stu Philllips. Futuramente postarei outro album produzido

THE HI-LO'S : BACK AGAIN

THE HI-LOS
----------------
THE HI-LO'S NOWADAYS.
Fourteen years after their last performance, in 1978, the group was asked if they’d make a special appearance at the Monterey Jazz Festival as a favor to festival producerand co-founder Jimmy Lyons. They agreed to regroup for the Monterey performance and their appearance was a huge success—leading to two new albums recorded for MPS records in 1978 and in 1980— Back Again, and Now. Deciding in the early 1980’s that their once-a-year-reunions, started in 1978, were not enough, the group began appearing more and more at colleges and concert halls throughout the country. In 1992 they decided to make one last appearance at a benefit concert for the Betty Ford Clinic in Palm Springs. Ironically, four years later, organizers for the 1996 Ford Clinic benefit concert asked the group to reconvene one last time. The guys agreed and played,to ate, their last concert during the summer of 1996. In April of 2001 original tenor/baritone Bob Morse passed away at the age of 78 in Phoenix where he had moved to retire (original baritone Bob Strasen had passed away earlier in 1991 at the age of 63). However, Gene Puerling, still living outside of San Francisco as he has for many years, continues to arrange for Chanticleer, The Real Group, and major college vocal ensembles such as Gold Company,of Western Michigan. Clark Burroughs, reportedly still possessing his famous laser tenor voice, fronts his own group called L’arc in Los Angeles.
Don Shelton remains active as a member of the Johnny Mann Singers, and as an instrumentalist in the Los Angeles studios.
He is also a member of two well-known LA-based groups: Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, and, arranger/composer/pianist
extraordinaire Clare Fischer’s Clarinet Choir. Although both Puerling and Burroughs are now in their early 70s, and Shelton
is 69, fans of the Hi-Lo’s—-of which I’m proud to be one—continue to hope that one more recording is possible. Hey, if you don’t wish...?

(*) CAV - Como eu lhe disse aí está a regravação de "Then I'll be tired of you".

A 4 VOZES

----------------
A 4 VOZES : is a brazilian female vocal quartet comprised of the sisters Doralice, Jussara, Jurema and their niece, Thatiane.
They where born in Minas Gerais, and deliver their music in a typical " brazilian inland" style of harmony. I would like to
stress that Minas Gerais gave the world such great artists as Ary Barroso, Milton Nascimento, Toninho Horta and Wagner Tiso, among many others. Who knows if we are supposed to face one more astonishing surprise? Let's give the girls a listen.
----------------

musicales.
==================
VOCAL SAMPLING
Vocal Sampling is a Cuban six-man a cappella group which has been described as one of the wonders of the musical world, capturing the attention and support of luminaries such as Quincy Jones, Carlos Santana, Peter Gabriel, David Byrne, Bobby McFerrin and Paul Simon. Not a choral group but a swinging Latin band which sings instead of playing the instruments of the salsa orchestra, their precision and skill has amazed audiences throughout the world, leaving many in disbelief. They don't use backing tracks - even the brass and flute parts are created using only their voices - and all is delivered with their unique blend of talent and infectious joy. As well as their symphonic orchestral replication, Vocal Sampling's repertoire also covers salsa, jazz, reggae and hip hop. The band continuously explore the seemingly endless possibilities of the human voice and their latest arrangements of both original and classic tracks are featured on CAMBIO DE TIEMPO, their first international album released on Decca in April 2001. I am very pleased with it because it is a good representation of exactly where we are now,' says René Baños, the band's lead singer and musical director. `We have taken great care with every detail, every interpretation.' The members of Vocal Sampling are all accomplished instrumentalists and arrangers who met at The Havana National Institute of Music. They began performing a cappella routines as a party piece in 1992 and, since then, they have continued to tour through Europe, Latin America and Asia.

THE BARRY SISTERS: SIDE BY SIDE + WE BELONG TOGETHER (2 albuns)

The Barry Sisters
------------
The Barry Sisters
The Barry Sisters were the first to bring popular adaptations of Yiddish folk songs to a mass audience. It took just one record
or so for them to be established as the United States' leading exponents of Yiddish Swing. From that point on, their tremendous
abilities --as international pop singers, a hugely successful sister act, and two fun, charming beauties-- quickly led to
international stardom. No small part of their success was the wonderful talent of arranger, conductor, and composer Abraham
Ellstein, a major leader of dance orchestras and symphonies. Claire's voice is the higher; the late Merna's was lower. What did they sing? Everything from a rollicking Hava Nagila, Roumania, Abi Gezunt, Ay Ay Hora, Zuges Mir Noch Amool, Die Greene Koseene, and Dem Nyem Scher (same as Carmen Miranda and the Andrews Sisters' "Wedding Samba") to Around the World, Ciao Ciao Bambina, Cry Me a River, Misty, Why Don't You Do Right, and a fairly scandalous version of Who's Sorry Now. They were regulars on the "Ed Sullivan Show," Jack Paar's show, and "Tonight" in addition to being mainstays at top nightspots in several countries. The Barry repertoire included songs in nine languages. So, as long as you don't have fifty childhood bar (or bat) mitzvahs to get over, and even if you do, the Barry Sisters are the perfect pop blend of fun and first-rate talent. Claire is still going strong as the millennium winds down, looking and performing as well as --or better than-- ever. We wish her the very best. A special thanks to her for visiting Hyp Records!

(*) NOTICE : There was another Barry Sisters Duo, an Australian musical group which consisted of Dorothy & Lorna Barry who in 1959 recorded seven singles, all of which were never released. The singles got hardly any airplay, and consequently failed to chart. So, their career failled to take off and they disbanded, shortly.
----------

---------
CANTO NONO is a Portuguese mixed a capella vocal octect, comprised or 4 guys and four girls. They deliver mainly typical tunes of their hometown, Porto. One of their advisors, arranger, composer and, after all, a good friend, is WARD SWINGLE, the legendary
creator of Swingle Singers, which grants - in advance, that this group deserves to be respectec. Lets give them a listen to check it
out.
---------
ALBUM POSTADO
